چکیده
This paper reports the findings of a small study undertaken in Scotland and England. The Maudsley Addiction Profile (MAP) and Lucid Adult Dyslexia Screening (LADS) were used to interview a small sample of 50 drug treatment service users. Half of the sample were residing in a therapeutic community (TC), whilst the other half were attending a community drug project and, almost exclusively, were receiving long-term prescriptions for methadone. Whilst the main intention of the study was to explore the prevalence of dyslexia amongst treatment-seeking populations, this paper examines the differences found between the users of the two treatment types. The TC population was significantly more likely to have been injecting prior to treatment, was using a more extensive range of drugs and was more likely to report psychological health problems, including suicidal ideation. The paper examines whether current UK policy on residential treatment is responsible for these differences and what these findings might mean for both treatment delivery and estimating the cost-benefits of treatment interventions.

Some might think science is a romantic endeavor. The classic ‘Edisonian’ lens of science has advanced precisely that vision: ‘the lone genius’. While this (false) metaphor of solitary scientific practice in a laboratory detached from society has prevailed for the past 400 years since the Enlightenment, ‘game changing’ transformative ideas do not hatch in a vacuum. Science and innovation are inh...

The extremely valuable article of Yankaskas et al. (1) focusing on young women (ie, younger than 40 years) quantifies these odds and underlines that, for that age range, there are fewer positive outcomes and more negative returns. Therefore, women...
